Movies and Reviews

Ahh this year is different. Lots of new movies ( of course) but then they are re-releasing a lot of old ones. Would be great to see them with a new persepective. Soo bring on the reviews, trailers, me celebrating and anticipating movies like a lil child !!!!

1. Beauty and the Beast 3D

Most beautiful love story ever told? Not quite but damn good. First I'll review the movie, next the 3D.

Only animated film to ever get a Best Picture Film nomination and it surely did earn its nom ( Lion King should have gotten one too, but that was one EVIL year, so many many good films.... lol).
Classic disney storytelling. Beautiful sets, normal animation, brilliant score... Alan Menken and Howard Ashman( RIP) at their very best. In the supermarket my little brother and I were humming the same song cause its stuck in our head ( Something there).
I refuse to say anything about the actual storyline ( go watch the movie).
Compared to today's films, its a bit corny and very short, but still powerful. The sound, the visuals, simple, easy to follow, easy to love. It's a children's film, its not meant to have an entire hour of romance blooming in the snow nor an hour of battle. An argument, save a life, a dance, realization. Simple. Its what people lost sight off I think. We dont need mountains and valleys for the journey. Life and love isn't that hard ( well most times).
Music and songs play such an important role in these films. Without it, there would be without/little emotion. A song will tell us everything about a character, a town, an event, much more than 30 mins of  dribble. Opening songs I could do without( not to say they're bad), but its when you reach the castle the lyricist went into high gear. " Be our guest' is fun, fun, fun. And so spectacular on the big screen. Disney World should have that as its welcome song. " Something there' is a lovely little piece that drastically jumps the changing emotions between our leads. Then to the main song, Beauty and the Beast. Angela Lansbury killed that song. OMG, that song will never die. Soft and gorgeous. The ballroom scene was matched perfectly to that song. Disney has Never reproduced anything close to that scene since ( maybe faintly with "So close" from Enchanted).
Robby Benson as Beast was amazing. From that heavy, harsh voice to low, gentle rumble. We had no reason to see an actual person with that performance . Every range of emotion was expressed even when the animation could not show it.
As a film, I cannot see how any animated film will ever beat it....... heck it beats 95% of films today.

Now on the the reason why it was on the big screen again......... the 3D.
Opening sequence was wonderfully done, actually gaspped!!! IF this was the level of work we were going to see throughout the film then we were in for a treat. Sadly that was not so. Most of the 3D was done nicely but the redrawing of characters were so bad at times, I swear it was just plain old laziness on their part. First big scene with the town's people, for wide shots the redrawn characters was TERRIBLE.
Of all the song pieces Be our guest suffered the least. I didn't check to see if they just didn't bother doing the 3D render. The Ballroom scene was ground breaking when the film was made and the 3D did little to enhance it. The redraw of the widest shot with Belle and Beast leaving was the worst in the whole film. Some close ups did have the same ' jumpy' problem as seen with Lion King 3D. I have no problems with any of the 3D, but I have to talk about that redrawing again. Some scenes didn't even look like the characters. I could not understand why they could not get it right. If it were not for the fact that I get to see and hear a beloved classic on the big screen again..... I would never go to see another 3D render again..........Little Mermaid is the carded for 2013.

Next- Perfect Sense- HOLY wow !!! blew my mind.

2. Perfect Sense

I have no clue how I stumbled upon this film. I have read so so reviews about the film, but personally I liked it.

Basically it’s an apocalyptic romance. We follow the romance between two people set amid a global pandemic. First our characters, Susan, an epidemiologist, investigating an emerging, mysterious disease. Susan works too much to cover her loneliness. Next to where she lives, works a chef, Michael. A man with his own demons but generally avoids emotionally connecting to anyone.

The other star of the show is the disease that robs people of their senses. There is no apparent medium though which it spreads, no way of knowing how to treat it and it’s everywhere across the planet. They do not go into any actual details of the disease except it's constantly changing names as it effects spread. The only symptom is an extreme emotion release for a very short time. The first sense to go was smell, which was preceded by uncontrollable grief. No one can escape it. Losing this one sense is one thing; it could just be something man could get used to. Weeks/months later people begin to lose their other senses, one by one. One thing we could see  was that the 'disease' is neurological. Our senses and emotions come from our brain. A massive emotional snap accompanying the loss of a sense definitely shows it. The order of the sensory loss also guarantees that mankind will not survive it.

The movie really is double sided sword. We see two people brought together as the world (people not the planet) begins to realise that this is end. In my opinion, the story was a bit rushed (it was a short movie). Our two main characters fall in love too quickly, but somehow I don’t think that was the objective of the director. He didn't want to show all the moments in between, just those that matters. Let your imagination do the rest. The emotional journey between the two was enough to stretch across hours of films.

The movie is not perfect, but sometimes the performances were amazing. At times the lines were really corny and stupid. Some really nice visuals (not special effects) too...... not ignoring the uncomfortable ones either. Michael a man who cannot sleep with people ( well that sold me to watch the rest of the film since I'm the same). Susan swims in her solitude. Ewan McGregor was so good... need to watch it again to comment on the music. I loved the narration..... through anger, love, joy, grief, panic, shock.

This film is ridiculously thought provoking. What would you do when losing your senses? In the end of the film it’s really a sappy thought........ It’s just about love, get it, and hold on to it.

For me it had my brain running a miles a minute. So many lines really eerie. When I saw the film, I was just regaining my sense of smell after a few weeks ( I had a long fever that killed my smell and I had no sinus problems at all). Days before I was thinking of things I would miss if it never came back ( a friend of mines completely lost her sense of smell after a fever too) . I penned it somewhere, how can you live without smelling anything. It is true that mines is nowhere as acute as most people. But I can't do without. Food, perfumes, the beach, night and morning air, the peanut buttery scent of puppies breath, flowers, or even the ridiculously bizarre day when I could smell a man's cologne for hours on end even though there was no scent like it in the house ( so freakishly weird)..... mind you there are smells that we could do without ( lol).
When I think about it, I have in some way or the other lost all 5 senses at some time or the other. Hearing ( kinda deaf anyway), taste(after a bad flu), sight ( during migraines I went blind), touch ( with my reattached finger it took months for it to feel again but it does so to a limited degree) . If I could live without a sense it would be taste, if I had to lose 2, taste and sight...Cannot even think of giving up smell, sound and touch. These are the ones that link us strongest, to a memory.

Hugo

WOW !!! WOW !!! WOW!!!
Bravo !!! * Clap Clap*
An utterly stunning film, beautifully told and brought to life by a legendary storyteller. Might I add it's the most original movie I've seen in years. Based on a children's book but in NO WAY a CHILDREN's movie ( I must admit to making this mistake myself)

We begin with Hugo Cabret an orphaned boy, living in a train station in 1930's Paris. His job is to fix the numerous clocks in the station. Other than work he spends time looking for food, hiding from the station inspector and gathering whatever parts he can for his father's Automaton. While trying to steal a toy from a store in the station, he gets caught. Hugo then forges a friendship with the shop owner's god-daughter Isabelle. From there the story takes off. I would say nothing more about what went on in the film. Just that you can not predict where the film will head. There was only one scene in the entire film that I could have predicted. There is no way of expecting it. So brilliantly amazing how they did it. Almost a dreary, Oliver Twist type movie, but in the most spectacular colour and sound.

Martin Scorcese brought the most amazing thing cinema has seen in years. This is his first 3D film and it is the best use of the technology I have seen so far. You can talk about Avatar bringing an imaginary world to life with the 3D, but this is 1930's Paris. There was no need for special effects( well except for one dream sequence). The 3D was used in almost all the live action scenes. Drop dead gorgeous I tell you. The script was perfect, lines that would stay with you forever. Scenes that have you laughing ( Sacha Baron Cohen and the doberman 'Blackie' are wonderful), your jaw will drop( imagery that belongs in a museum), tears will brim, goosebumbs, your heart will race with expectation. First time seeing the film my brain was overwhelmed in processing it. I am sure next time I will be a blubbering fool, hehe.
GO WATCH IT folks..... in cinema.
Warning: It is not a fast paced movie, a lot of people with lower film standards will get bored. As a result I dont see it showing for very long in cinemas here, but you have to see it in 3D.
Hands down the best movie I have seen in years.

Coming soon( to watch , then write)
Girl with Dragon Tattoo- as long I as finish the book before it stops showing, I will go take a watch....... probably should get the book first lol

Phantom Menace 3D - rerelease of SW episode 1..... Pod racing in 3D, John Williams with Duel of fates with surround sound....... thats enough( hehe)

Titanic 3D- rerelease for the 100th anniversary of the actual sinking.Brilliant movie, the only way to watch that movie is on the big screen with Dolby surround sound ( its always disappointing on tv lol

Detachment - chronicles various teachers through the eyes of a sub. Seeing way too much of myself  in it not to give it a watch...... ( watching the main character freeze when a student hugged him was like looking in a mirror)

The lucky one - hey the girly side in me shows up every couple of years, hehe, so why not take in  romantic film?
Wrath of theTitans- might go take a watch, not sure yet.
