Tales from NEC, lol

Why is it that my mostly male classes are filled with the bestest, sweetest ( not necessarily the smartest though) kids?

Again I have the 'technical' class and its 16 boys to 1 girl. These days only 5-6 of them come to class regularly ( which was to be expected sad to say ). Again, a couple of them wont pass the subject, I dont see it happening ( dont say I have no faith in them, I just know by now who can do it and who cant ) but they still come , they still try. They have a free period, they come to see if I would take them. I miss a class they come looking for me.

I know sometimes when I say certain words, an accent that is not ours spills out... either Guyanese ( I am half guyanese afterall) or British. I dont know why that happens, but it does. The other day it happened and they all took clue to take the same way. So for an entire period we basically slaughtered the british accent. I was hoping someone would stop and I think they were waiting for me to stop also. So we kept going and going. It was sooo funny.

One boy who never comes to class decides to show up for a lab and is of course clueless. I refuse to spend my time helping him. When he asks a question, I tell him to ask one of his classmates. It sounds mean, but it frees me up to help a child who actually wants to do the work and the kid who is helping him is further understanding the topic by explaining it. Plus they get first hand exposure to the frustrations we teachers have with children who have just signed off mentally from the subject. The regular kids dont like him being here either, you could see it in their face, none of them wanting to partner with him. This boy should have never been in this class. He never comes to class, he has no written notes, he talks half through the class , he complains ' he doh understand this shit', when you tell him to come to class he says he is always busy and business to tend to. What is this business? Taxing form 1's for their money and hiding out in the school. Yeah Yeah, you will say he probably has some problems at home etc etc. I have spoken to the safety officer and other people from administration and there is not much that can be done when someone's mind is closed off.

I am so done with kids like that. Those who want to do something, will find someone to ask for help, to lean on etc. I refuse to run down anyone ( who doesn't want it ) in that school. The kids I have never given up on have made me proud ( the one who has made me the proudest isn't a scholarship winner, but a kid from one of these classes who always got suspended because of the group he hung out with. The boy is brilliant , I begged and begged and quarreled with him to stick with it. Well my boy did DJing while in the trade school and is now a lecturer there, making well over twice what I do. I always get the biggest hug whenever he sees me and I always watch him misty eyed when we part ways) ............. Oh what was I saying?

Oh right, rambling eh !!!! Sounds about right !!
